ABOUT US
LEARNING BEYOND LIMITATIONS
The Arbor School is a nonprofit organization that offers the most comprehensive special needs education program in Houston for children with a wide range of developmental delays, 6 weeks through age 18. The Arbor strives to educate, empower, and build hope for children with significant special needs and their families.
A HISTORY OF SERVING THE UNDERSERVED
It all started as a labor of love by Suzanne Cuthbertson and her family. After moving here from the state of New York, the former special education teacher and administrator saw that Houston sorely lacked a place where children with significant special needs could receive an educational program 100% individualized to their needs.
And so, in 1988, The Arbor School was established to offer a place for special needs children ages 6 months to 3 years to receive intensive early intervention services and a quality education, regardless of their diagnosis or perceived limitations.

“Having searched and searched for answers and/or a diagnosis with no success, we didn’t know what the future would hold for our son. What we learned after coming to The Arbor is that the diagnosis is of little importance, what really matters is that he is full of potential and that there is so much hope for his future.”

GROWING FOR THE GREATER GOOD
What started as a one-room school for infants up to children age 3, is now a robust program with the ability to serve up to 75 students and designed to meet a wide range of needs for children through age 18.
In keeping with our founder’s mission, we remain committed to accepting children in infancy, including those who have severe and/or multiple diagnoses, as well as those who have not received a diagnosis. Whenever possible, our aim is to begin early and intensively so we can develop key skills that will become a foundation for further learning.
CELEBRATING LIFELONG LEARNING
The Arbor holds strong to the belief that each child has an enormous capacity to develop and learn to the best of his or her abilities. In a world of limitations, we strive to create a space where all children can thrive and reach their greatest level of personal success.
